Everything you need to know about Wasps: Identification, Impacts and Elimination Strategies

Reading time: 2:35 minutes

Wasp Identification

Unpopular creatures at home, wasps, particularly yellow wasps and the dreaded hornets, are distinguished by their moderate size, oscillating between 10 and 25 mm. Their visual signature, black and yellow, sometimes white bands, adorns their abdomen. While some species of wasps are harmless, others, such as the German wasp, living in colonies, are more common and dangerous, unfortunately famous for their aggression.

Effects of Wasps

In an almost artistic, yet dangerous way, wasps can inject painful venom via a hollow stinger. They are particularly threatening during outdoor public events and gatherings, lured by the odors coming from sugary and protein food sources. Although repeated stings are possible, and these sometimes lead to serious allergic reactions, we must not forget their essential ecological role, particularly in the capture of harmful insects and pollination.

Wasp Prevention

At the start of summer, a careful examination of your property for possible nests under construction is wise. To discourage their visit, avoid displaying moist or sugary foods. Also opt for airtight containers for waste. Wasp traps, commonly called wasp traps, can be effective, especially when baited with protein rather than sugary wasp baits so as not to attract bees. These types of traps can prevent a nest from establishing itself on your property and thus help with prevention.

Elimination of Wasp Nests

In the case of a non-threatening nest, patience is a virtue; it is often best to leave it in place until winter. For an active nest, elimination should be approached with caution, or even entrusted to a professional. A safe method is to wrap the nest in a plastic bag and freeze it for 48 hours to kill the wasps. The use of protective clothing and a head net is strongly recommended.

Use of Chemicals

The application of insecticides, such as wasp spray, powder or specific poison, is a common practice. It is essential to ensure that these products are approved by Health Canada and to scrupulously follow the instructions. Spraying is best done in the evening, when wasps are less active and inside the nest, and being careful not to shine direct light on the nest.

Conclusion

Wasp management requires a balanced strategy between prevention, physical intervention and judicious use of chemicals. Our wasp traps and insecticides are available on our online store. However, it is important to consider the ecological impact of wasps and favor environmentally friendly control methods.
